"Essential reading for anyone wanting to engage meaningfully with AI in their life. His five-minute rule is golden advice."

Prof. Grant Schofield PhD — Auckland University of Technology

Five reasons this belongs in your program.

Common reading committees evaluate books on accessibility, relevance, richness for programming, and author availability. This book meets every criterion.

01
Accessible to every major

The book opens with a firefighter's account of watching diagnostic thinking disappear from emergency training. That story requires no academic background and resonates across business, engineering, nursing, and the humanities equally.

02
Urgent for this exact moment

Every university is developing AI policy right now. This book gives faculty, staff, and students a shared intellectual framework for those conversations before they begin. Gartner called the core argument "people amplification" in Fortune magazine this month.

03
Short enough to actually read

Designed to be completed over a weekend and discussed productively in a single session. Incoming students will read it. That is not guaranteed with every common reading selection.

04
Rich enough for programming

Fourteen chapters map naturally onto seminar discussions, residence hall programs, orientation sessions, and first-year writing assignments. A companion faculty guide and writing prompts are included at no cost.

05
Author available for campus visits

Paul Alden is available for in-person keynotes at regional institutions and virtual presentations nationally, including Q&A sessions, faculty discussions, and first-year orientation programming.

06
Independently validated thesis

Professor Grant Schofield of Auckland University of Technology arrived at the same argument through public health research. A Gartner study published this month arrived there through surveying 350 global executives. Three paths. One destination.

350 Global executives
surveyed by Gartner
A Gartner study published in Fortune in May 2026 found that companies reporting the highest ROI from AI were not the ones cutting headcount. They were the ones using AI as a form of people amplification, implementing the technology to make workers more capable rather than replacing them. That is the argument at the center of The Amplified Mind, written before the study was published, arrived at through 36 years in the fire service.

Paul Alden

Paul Alden spent 36 years in the fire service, retiring as a Captain. His career gave him an unusual laboratory for understanding human performance under pressure: how people think when information is incomplete, conditions are uncertain, and decisions carry real consequences.

The Amplified Mind grew from a pattern he observed across two domains. First, in emergency medicine, where protocol-driven training quietly moved the generative stage of clinical reasoning outside the practitioner's mind. Then in every professional environment he encountered, where AI was doing the same thing faster and at scale.

He is available for campus visits, faculty discussions, and student orientation programming. His speaking draws on the same credibility that grounds the book: the specific, visceral experience of watching human judgment either hold or fail under real conditions.
